Somerset Bridge Values
Aspire to be the best we can in our behaviour, our learning and our hopes and dreams.
Brave to challenge ourselves and take risks so that we achieve the best we can.
Care for our school environment, so that we maintain a safe, sustainable and healthy community and set an example for life choices both within and outside of school.
Collaborate with all members of the community – pupils, parents, staff, governors, neighbouring schools and organisations in the local area - ensuring that all contributions are encouraged and valued.

In PSHE, we intend to support children in becoming healthy and responsible members of the community.  At Somerset Bridge, we want all of our pupils to have a secure understanding of their personal and social development. Throughout our PSHE lessons, children will learn about Relationship and Health Education, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development, British Values and Safeguarding.

PSHE is implemented through following Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE scheme. This scheme is made up of 6 units which each involves 6 lessons.  Jigsaw is a spiral curriculum so all year groups will follow the same overarching 6 units, each year building upon previous learning.

The 6 units are:

  1. Being me in my world

  2. Celebrating difference

  3. Dreams and goals

  4. Healthy me

  5. Relationships

  6. Changing me

In RSE, we intend to provide the children with the tools required to develop healthy positive relationships appropriate to their age in conjunction with developing respect for self and others. We aim to empower young people to understand and respect their bodies and be able to cope with the changes puberty brings without fear.  We believe RSE is important for our pupils and school because the world our children are growing up in has changed immensely, has become more complex and children need to know how to stay safe both on and offline as this distinction can be less discernible for many young people.  As adults, our children will face many complex decisions.  Our school’s overarching aim for pupils is to fully prepare them for their transition to secondary school and then into their adult lives, equipped with positive values and the skills and qualities to make informed, affirming choices and decisions.

At Somerset Bridge, the aims of relationships and sex education (RSE) are to:

  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place.

  • Prepare pupils for puberty; give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene.

  • Help pupils develop the personal qualities and skills of self-respect, confidence and empathy.

  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships.

  • Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies.

The aims will be implemented through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of learning.  Objectives covered through this scheme can be found in Somerset Bridge’s Relationships and Sex Education Policy on our website.
