Year 6 – Mrs Turner

Aurora Borealis Class.  Welcome to our class page!

We hope you enjoy finding out what we have been getting up to this academic year.

Summer Term.

In our Science lessons, we have been finding out all about bacteria.  After researching the different types, we made some models of them using plasticine.  We then investigated how yeast can be used in the food industry and did an experiment to use the best conditions for yeast to grow.

In Music, we have been looking at the different types of music from around the world, including Indian and Flamenco music.  We have been using percussion instruments and xylophones to learn about rhythm and how to play an Indian rag.

We were asked to provide some volunteers to go over to Stockmoor Lodge Care Home to repaint their summerhouse.  Three children went over from our class:  Justina, Harry and Kelsie and they did a brilliant job.  They also received an Easter Egg for their efforts.

In DT, we designed and then made a model island using wire and Modroc.  This was then painted to show the natural features that would be found there.

Spring Term.

Because of Covid-19, we had to spend the first couple of months of this term in Lockdown so most of us were learning from home using Google Classroom.  However, we have enjoyed returning to school and here are some of the lessons and events that we have enjoyed this term.

Red Nose Day/ Comic Relief.

We had a non-uniform day and some of us came in with our red noses.  In the afternoon, we did a Comic Relief Quiz (that was won by Liliana and Howard) and planted some seeds for the school gardens that was part of a Census Let's Count activity.  We counted how many seeds we planted and then how many germinated to see how successful we had been.

We have also included 2 pictures of the raised beds that are outside each classroom that we organised last term. These are now bursting into colour from the bulbs that were planted before Christmas.

Red Nose Day

Home Learning.

Please read the attached Word Document below explaining how you will be taught during this period of Home Learning.  It also tells you how to join a Google Classroom meeting at 9.30 on Wednesday 6th January. Everyone needs to log on to this.  See you there!smiley

We hope you enjoy our signed versions of: "We wish you a Merry Christmas!" We did so well, that Mrs Turner decided that we should also try at double speed.

Welcome to our class:  Aurora Borealis Class.

After researching some of the wonders of our world, we have decided to be called the Aurora Borealis Class.  We have been finding out all about this and have completed an individual piece of artwork, which is now on our class display.  Here are some pictures:

Autumn Term 2.

In our Topic lessons, we have been finding out about key events that happened in WW2, such as "Operation Dynamo" and VE Day.  We worked in groups to research our topic and then produced a poster, before presenting it to the rest of the class.  Here are some of us giving our presentations:

Gathering Ideas for our Portal Stories.

Odd Socks Day.

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, we wore odd socks to celebrate how unique we all are.

Anderson Shelter Models.

After learning about Anderson Shelters and the Blitz, we all made a model of one.  Here we all are being creative:

Autumn Term 1.

Evacuees in WW2.

We have been finding out about what life was like for children living during WW2.  We wrote a letter home and some of us dressed up as an evacuee.

Black History Month October 2020.

This year, we have been finding out all about Mae Jemison, who was the first black woman to go to space and to join NASA.  Here are two of our best posters.

Welcome to Year 6!

Hello everyone.  I am really looking forward to welcoming you all back into school after such a long break.  I hope you are all looking forward to returning to school and catching up with all your friends again.  I can't wait to get to know you and find out about what you've been getting up to over the longest summer holiday ever.

We start off learning about World War 2 in our Topic lessons and there will be lots of other interesting things to look forward to in Year 6 as well.

Have fun and I'll see you soon!

Mrs Turner.
