Operation Topaz Parent/ Child workshops

Operation Topaz is Avon and Somerset Constabulary’s Child Sexual Exploitation perpetrator disruption team. They work to support victims and promote education for children and carers about how to reduce the risks of exploitation.

We are fortunate to be welcoming Andri, from the team, to lead some online safety parent and child workshops on Tuesday 16^th June. The workshops will be for Year 5 and Year 6 during the morning. At 2.30pm, parents and carers of children in Key Stage 2 will be invited to come into school for an assembly with the children. We will be emailing a Google form for you to confirm your attendance at this assembly after the May half-term.

Are you eligible?

Grants are available for families living on low income, raising a disabled or seriously ill child or young person whose additional needs meet the Family Funds child and young person's eligibility criteria. 

Sevens areas of support 

Personal care: Your child needs a high level of physical support with feeding, washing, toileting or moving and transferring 

Access to social activities: Your child needs a high level of support to engage socially and take part in activities. 

Education: your child needs a high level of support with education and learning. Please let us know who gives this assistance, and in what ways.

Communication: Your child needs a high level of support with listening, speaking and understanding.

Supervision and vigilance: Your child needs a high level of supervision and measures to ensure their safety. 

Medical or therapeutic treatment, or conditional management: Your child needs a high level of support in the form of treatment or therapy. 

Physical environment and specialist resources: Your child needs a high level of support with physical adaptations and adjustments

Escapeline 

Escapeline offers a safe, non-judgemental space to talk things through and receive guidance from trained advisors. Support is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm.

Online Safety

Before the Easter holiday, some of our Online Safety Champions, visited our on-site nursery. They shared some online safety tips, aimed at 3 and 4-year-olds and played some age-related games with them too. As our online safety experts, they did Somerset Bridge proud!

This month, the reception children have been learning about animals and insects. We have some caterpillars, and we have watched them change into their chrysalis. We have found out that they are going to be Painted Ladies. We are also going to be learning about nocturnal animals.

The children listened to the story of the Hungry Caterpillar. We made play dough caterpillars, paper chain caterpillars and even made some butterfly prints.

Year 5 have had a busy and exciting start to the Summer Term, embracing new challenges and opportunities across the curriculum. The children have worked hard in their learning, shown great enthusiasm in class, and continued to develop their confidence, teamwork and independence.

In Maths, we have been learning all about angles and were very excited to use a protractor for the first time. The children enjoyed developing this new skill and practised measuring and drawing different types of angles accurately. They have also been using their problem-solving and reasoning skills to calculate missing angles around a point and on a straight line, explaining how they worked out their answers using mathematical vocabulary. The class showed great perseverance when tackling challenging questions and worked collaboratively to discuss different methods and strategies.

In English, we have been refining our suspense writing skills and exploring how authors create tension and excitement for the reader. The children have been experimenting with a range of sentence structures, including sentence openers and relative clauses, to make their writing more engaging and dramatic. They carefully selected ambitious vocabulary and descriptive language to build atmosphere and keep the reader intrigued. Through planning, drafting and editing their work, the class have shown increasing confidence in developing suspense within their narratives and have enjoyed sharing their ideas with one another. The children have also been using their computing skills to enhance their suspense stories by adding sound effects to create atmosphere and build tension for the audience. They enjoyed combining our class text with technology to bring the story to life in an engaging and imaginative way.

In Science, Year 5 have been learning about living things, with a particular focus on the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles and insects. The children enjoyed exploring how different animals grow and change throughout their lives, comparing similarities and differences between each group. They were especially fascinated by the world of metamorphosis and loved discovering how insects and amphibians transform during their life cycles. Throughout the topic, the class have learnt many new and interesting facts about a variety of creatures and have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm during discussions and investigations.

Easter Bingo Success

Celebrating SATs Success!
