Spring Term  - February Edition

Headteacher's Welcome

Although February has been a short month, and one that included our half-term break, it has certainly not been a quiet one here at Somerset Bridge. Our pupils have continued to work hard and achieve across the curriculum. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm for learning in every classroom. From enrichment activities and school trips to thoughtful work in English and Maths, there has been a real sense of determination and curiosity around the school. Thank you, as always, for your continued support; it makes such a difference to what we are able to achieve together.

I am also delighted to share some exciting news about a development that will further strengthen our inclusive provision. In the weeks following the Easter break, we will be welcoming a new SEN Satellite Provision on our school site, led by Polden Bower School. This specialist base will provide high quality, tailored support for pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans, enabling them to access the expertise of Polden Bower staff while still benefiting from the wider opportunities of our mainstream environment.

It is anticipated that some children currently attending Somerset Bridge who have Education, Health and Care Plans may access the satellite either full-time or part-time, depending on their individual needs and what is identified as best supporting their progress, wellbeing, and inclusion. We are proud to be working collaboratively to ensure every child can thrive and receive the right support at the right time.

We look forward to sharing more updates as the satellite provision prepares to open and will continue to work closely with families throughout this process. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding this exciting change, then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Online Safety

Our school took in Safer Internet Day 2026, which happened on Tuesday 10th February. This global event encourages children, young people and adults to reflect on how we use the online world and digital technology. It provides an important opportunity to strengthen conversations about online safety, wellbeing and responsible digital behaviour.

This year’s theme was: “Smart tech, safe choices – exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.”

As artificial intelligence tools and smart technologies become more woven into everyday life, this theme focuses on building young people’s confidence, critical thinking and good judgement when using digital tools. Our aim is to empower everyone to make informed, sensible and safe choices online.

Our approach reinforces that online safety is an ongoing safeguarding responsibility shared by school, pupils and families.

Everyone was reminded:

  • How to stay safe in online interactions
  • Where they can seek support if something worries them online
  • How to report concerns by speaking to any trusted adult
  • The importance of reporting issues without fear or shame, as help is always available

Thank you for your continued support in helping our young people navigate the digital world with confidence and responsibility.

Year 1 Classes

Year 1 has been very busy this term – so much learning going on! In our topic on ‘Toys’ we have been learning about and comparing toys from the past with toys we play with today.

On Wednesday 4th February 2026, we had a visit from Somerset Heritage. Natasha came and talked to us about toys in the past, showing us some old well-loved toys.

Teddy
Rag Doll
China Doll
Mangle
Wooden Horse

We explored some of the toys from over 100 years ago. We put on some Victorian clothing and played like Victorian children. We did some investigating, looking at the difference between old and new toys and comparing what they were made from.

We also looked at an old zoetrope animation, and made our own thaumatropes.

Year 3 Classes - Spotlight

In Year 3, we have been having samba lessons with Mr Selby. We have been learning how to play: shakers, go-go bells, tambouram drums and surdo drums. Mr Selby has also been teaching us about rhythm and volume control so we can create our own samba band.

Maths

In maths, we have started our new topic of Fractions. After recapping our previous learning from Year 2, we looked at fractions of both shapes and amounts. We built towers using multilink cubes and wrote down each colour as a fraction.

We also played some games using the IPads, including trying to make pictures to match a written fraction. If you’d like to test your fraction skills, have a go at Levels 1-5 using the QR code below!

In the coming weeks, we will be looking at fractions on a number line and solving problems involving fractions of both shapes and numbers.

Wellbeing

In the Autumn term, children from years 2 to 6 completed our pupil wellbeing questionnaire, which asked children how happy, safe, and supported they feel in school. We are delighted to share that the results were very positive, with many pupils expressing that they enjoy coming to school and feel well cared for. The survey also highlighted a few areas where we can work together, particularly in helping pupils get enough sleep, eat a healthy balanced diet, and stay active each day.

We have closely monitored the wellbeing responses of all children, and where pupils answered any questions negatively, immediate support was put in place. Class teachers and trusted adults checked in with each child individually, offering a safe and calm space to talk through their worries. Pastoral staff also provided additional time for children who needed further emotional support, ensuring they felt listened to, understood, and reassured. Through these conversations, we were able to identify concerns early and work with the children to help them feel more secure and supported in school.
