Religion & Worldviews
Intent:
Our aim is to help children develop an understanding of the different religions, beliefs and worldviews that shape our world. Through engaging, enquiry-led learning, children will explore what people believe, how beliefs influence the way people live and the similarities and differences between different religions and worldviews.
At Somerset Bridge, we want our children to become curious, respectful and open-minded thinkers. Our curriculum encourages children to ask thoughtful questions, listen to different perspectives and reflect on their own ideas and experiences. We want children to understand that people may have different answers to life's big questions and that learning about these differences can help us to live well together in our diverse society.
Implementation:
The new curriculum is being introduced across the school during 2026–27. Teachers are following the new Somerset Agreed Syllabus for Religion and Worldviews, with lessons planned around key questions and opportunities for children to explore, discuss and reflect.
Although children will study particular religions and worldviews in depth, we will also encourage them to make connections and comparisons with other religions and worldviews wherever appropriate. This will help children to build a broader understanding rather than viewing beliefs in isolation.
Children will have opportunities to learn through a range of activities, including discussion, questioning, stories, artefacts, creative activities and independent reflection. We want our lessons to encourage children to think deeply and develop their understanding as they progress through the school.
We additionally implement RE in the following ways:
- Assemblies from Lorna Hazel, a chaplain from our local parish, about Bible Stories and Christian teachings.
- The Bible Society ‘Open the Book’ attend our school; giving the children the chance to act out stories from the Bible in front of an audience.
- KS1 pupils take part in an annual Nativity play at Christmas.
