Year 4 - Mrs Palmer and Miss Lockwood
Welcome to the Year 4 page.
Spring
Year 4 have been diving enthusiastically into their Science topic on Humans and Other Living Creatures, and the classroom has been buzzing with curiosity. From hands‑on investigations to thoughtful discussions, the children have shown real excitement and maturity in their learning. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they ask big questions and make new discoveries about the living things that share our planet.
We had a brilliant time exploring this Science topic this term, diving into the fascinating world of humans and other living things. We began by learning about the different types of teeth and their functions, discovering how incisors, canines, and molars each play a special role in helping us eat. This led to discussions about the importance of keeping teeth clean, supported by a fun and eye‑opening experiment using eggshells to observe how different liquids can affect tooth enamel.
The children also developed a strong understanding of the human digestive system, learning to name and explain the journey food takes through the body. To bring this to life, they took part in a hands‑on experiment that replicated the digestive process from start to finish—an unforgettable (and slightly messy) way to see science in action. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and thoughtful questions have made this topic a real highlight of the term.
This term, the children have been learning to swim at Burnham‑on‑Sea swimming pool. The instructors have made each lesson fun while building confidence, water safety, and strong early technique. With gentle guidance and plenty of smiles, the children are progressing at their own pace and developing a positive, lasting connection with the water. We have also taken part in extra PE lessons and House events, such as Boccia and volleyball.
In Geography, we have discovered that coastlines are constantly changing, shaped by powerful natural forces. We have looked at how cracks, caves, arches, stacks and stumps are formed and have compared Burnham beach with Lyme Regis. Outside, in the school grounds, we have used compasses and navigated our way around the school field.
To hook us into our new English topic, the children explored the school grounds with great excitement, hunting for weird and wonderful ingredients to mix into their own magical potion. They gathered crunchy leaves, feathery grasses, fallen petals, and mysterious twigs, imagining each one adding a special power. Every discovery sparked new ideas about what their potion might do. Back in class, they combined their treasures, describing bubbling colours, swirling smells, and extraordinary effects in recipes. The activity encouraged creativity, teamwork, and plenty of laughter as children invented wild, marvellous mixtures that felt straight out of a storybook. We will now look at an excerpt from George’s Marvellous medicine for the next few weeks.
