Autumn Term

Here is a summary of what we do in the Autumn Term of Year 2. As the term progresses, we will share updates and pictures. For more information about each subject, please see our Knowledge Organisers, which can be found here.

Maths

This term, Year 2 children are developing their number skills by working with numbers to 100, exploring place value and comparing quantities. They will be learning a range of addition and subtraction methods and applying these skills to real-life contexts such as money. Later in the term, the children will learn about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

English

Our first unit is based on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, and the children will work towards writing their own version of the story. We will also explore Julia Donaldson's 'A Squash and a Squeeze' and work on writing instructions.

Science

In our Science topic, Living Things and Their Habitats, the children are learning about different habitats and how plants and animals are suited to the environments in which they live. They are also exploring how living things depend on each other for food and shelter, and learning to identify whether something is living, dead or has never been alive.

Geography

The children learn about Kenya in the Autumn term of Year 2. We work with maps to identify where Kenya is and that it is part of Africa. The children learn about what life can be like in Kenya and compare it to the UK. This exciting topic culminates in 'Kenya Day', where the children will make crafts and food inspired by Africa and sing and perform African songs. Later in the term, the children learn about their local area, including its location within the UK and human and physical features.

Art

In our Art this term, the children will work on collage skills, inspired by the bright, eye-catching work of Eric Carle. They will work towards creating their own animal collages of African animals. They will also learn about the life and work of Wassily Kandinsky. The focus will be on his circle colour studies and the children will work in pastel and paint to create their own pieces.
