The Friends of Somerset Bridge Primary School P.T.F.A
Who are we?
The Friends of Somerset Bridge Primary School is a Parent, Teacher and Friends Association. This means that any parent/carer or relative of a child at our school can be a member. Currently, our committee members are: Shane Stevens (Chairperson), Matt Harding (Vice Chair), Anna Upham (Secretary) and Jennifer Manners (Treasurer), and a number of other parents who attend meetings on a regular basis.
The staff at our school are all inherently members and some representatives of staff attend meetings where possible.
What are our aims?
Our aim is to support the school and its children. This is mostly achieved through organising fund-raising events. We also support school events and activities.
What kind of events do you get involved in?
Some examples of fund-raising projects that we have recently worked on are our Christmas and Summer fêtes, School disco’s, Personalised branded PE bags and drinking bottles, Bibic textile collections, Evening Bingo events, ice-cream Fridays and our new School Uniform Sale and exchange on Fridays as well.
We have recently spent some of our fund-raising proceeds on playground equipment, a poly tunnel for the school garden, Sofas for the reading corners in the classrooms, creating the new sensory room as well as providing prizes for competitions run in the school. Our longer term project is to fund a larger scale piece of equipment for the playgrounds.
We also host the best SATS reward party in the County (if not the Country) where we take all of Year 6, as a reward for completing their SAT tests in May, to a private screening at our local cinema, followed by a party in a special location with DJ, karaoke and food all provided free of charge.
We have many more ideas that we would like to work on in the forthcoming academic year.
We also support school events by serving refreshments, for example, at evening events.
How often do we meet?
We usually meet around once a month. This is usually on a Thursday evening at the school. The time of our meeting varies in order to suit both teachers and parents/carers who wish to attend. Some of our members are not able to attend meetings, but are updated with meeting minutes and support us at events.
When we have an event ‘in-the-pipeline’, we often have sub-committee meetings in order to solely concentrate on the event planning.
How do I become a member?
We are by no means an exclusive club and welcome anyone who wishes to join us. You can register your interest with the staff in the school office by leaving your email address or phone number and we will contact you. Or you can simply come along to our next meeting. The staff in the school office will be able to tell you when the next meeting is scheduled for.
Can I be a member even if I cannot attend meetings?
Of course. Some of our members are unable to attend meetings but we keep contact through email and seeing each other in the playground.
If you would like to support the school but are not able to offer yourself as a P.T.F.A member, you can complete a ‘parent questionnaire’ to give us any information about how you can help us. You can obtain a questionnaire from the school office. Some people, for example, may be able to ask their employer for support for the school or may be able to offer a service or skill to the school themselves.
